Ed Asner

Best known as the gruff newsman Lou Grant on ?The Mary Tyler Moore Show,? Asner?s role earned him three Emmy awards.

After appearing for several years in an off-Broadway production of ?The Three Penny Opera,? Asner landed minor film and television roles before parlaying his cue ball lined face into a steady stream of villainous portrayals of television characters.

With the close of ?The Mary Tyler Moore Show,? after a seven year stint in 1977, Asner starred in the title role on his own show ?Lou Grant,? an hour-long show centered around a big city newspaper.

A political activist, Grant twice headed the Screen Actors Guild. A much publicized power struggle that Asner lost to Charlton Heston over Asner?s political views on the U.S. governments role in Central America led to Asners? ouster as head of the Screen Actors Guild, and Asner would say the 1982 cancellation of his television show as well.

Asner continues to speak out on a host liberal causes, most recently for the ADL.
