Meryl Streep

Actress

An incredible eleven time Oscar nominee, and two time Oscar winner, Meryl Streep has long been tagged with the title ?World?s Greatest Living Actress.? The foundations for this moniker are her unique ability to eliminate the lines between herself and the characters she portrays.

Born Mary Louise Streep in Summit, New Jersey, Streep initially took operatic voices lessons before turning to drama while at Vassar. Upon graduation, she studied at the Yale School of Drama, appearing in a number of productions put on by the Yale Repertory Theater. A brief stint off-Broadway was followed by performances in such Broadway plays as Tennessee Willams? ?27 Wagons Full of Cotton,? which garnered her a Tony nomination.

Streep first made her television debut in ?The Deadliest Season,? the same year she debuted in ?Julia,? (1977), playing opposite luminaries Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave and Hal Holbrook. By the following year, she was an Oscar nominated actress for her role in ?The Deer Hunter,? (1978), and an Emmy Award winner for her work in the gripping mini-series ?Holocaust.?

Streep went on to win the Academy Award for her performances in ?Kramer vs. Kramer,? (1979), and ?Sophie?s Choice,? (1982), a gut-wrenching performance of a Polish woman who survived the Nazi concentration camps. The role brought her wide spread acclaim, and gave her the opportunity to showcase her uncanny and highly credible facility with accents.
